Homestyle cooking away from home

One Saturday afternoon during summer break, my sister and I were really hungry, not hungry for McDonald's or Wendy's, but we wanted a real rib sticking, home-style, grandma's-house type of meal. So we decided to try Big Daddys, a restaurant a few blocks away from Norfolk State University.
The smell of fried catfish and collard greens slapped me in the face as we walked in. We grabbed a menu, but we couldn't decide what we wanted. There were so many choices...like the Philly cheese steak sandwich, fried shrimp dinner, and plenty of appetizing sides to choose from.
We decided to dine in instead of ordering to go. The dining area was relaxing. They had comfortable seating, fair temperature, and five televisions all tuned to BET's 106 and Park.
We finally placed our orders. I decided to get the smothered pork chop dinner, which came with two sides and my choice of a roll or cornbread. I ordered the candied yams and collard greens with cornbread. My sister ordered the smothered chicken with rice, mac and cheese and a roll.
The service was a little slow, but there were a lot of people ordering take out. When I received my food, I was shocked. The portions were gigantic! I knew immediately I was going to need a box. The collard greens needed a lot more seasoning, so I had to sprinkle a lot of pepper. The candied yams were off-the= hook. They were soft and sweet to perfection, just how I like them. So was the corn bread. The pork chop was tender, and the gravy was seasoned perfectly.
I had a few bites of each, and then I was stuffed. Actually, that plate lasted me two days.
There was only one thing that bothered me. After taking a few bites of the yams, I found a small piece of plastic in it. Luckily, I saw it before I put it in my mouth. Overall, however, the food was delicious.
So, for all of you who live on campus, and don't enjoy a home-cooked meal too often, this is the place to get it away from home.
But first, check your food for bits of plastic.
