Alumni Tim Reid and celebrated comedian Tom Dreesen addressed an attentive audience at Norfolk State University in the Douglas L. Wilder Performing Arts Center. Reid and Dreesen recently released a book titled "Tim and Tom: an American Comedy in Black and White" which they signed copies of after their speech.

The comedian's book is a retrospect of their careers as a black and white comedy duo during the late 60's and early 70's, a time of heightened racial tension in America.

When asked by an audience member why they decided to write the book Dreesen replied by referring to Remember The Titans, a movie about team mates, one black and one white, who became like brothers. "I called up Tim and told him that's our story. We have to tell it," urged Dreesen.

"I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for this university," stated Tim Reid who is Norfolk State alumni. Mr. Reid is a native a Norfolk and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1968. He is best known for his work on the hit sitcom Sister, Sister.

The two brought many laughs to the audience with their sense of humor and relaxed way of speaking. Even though they are comedians, they also had serious issues they wanted to make clear.

Reid, a graduate of a Historically Black College, along with Dreesen, wants to raise awareness of how important and necessary gaining knowledge is no matter what school a person attends.

The two went on to talk about their personal experience before they teamed up to work on their comedy act.

Very thankful for their appearance at Norfolk State University, the audience formed a long line for questions then another long line for autographs. With smiles on their faces they humorously answered questions and gladly signed autographs.

They finished by saying, "Once you graduate, you have to give back to your school. Black colleges receive the least money from their alumni and that needs to change." Words of wisdom to a room full of future graduates.

Reid and Dreesen were the first speakers of The School of Business, in partnership with the Honors College new Lyceum Speaker's Series.
