The week of Nov. 12 -16 marked the 26th Annual Media Field Study Trip to New York City, which was held by the Department of Mass Communications and Journalism of NSU. Department head Wanda Brokington, Duanne Hoffler-Foster and Stanley Tickton, were participating faculty members that accompanied students on the trip.
Students within the Mass Communications and Journalism Department were once again
granted the opportunity, to experience, develop and enhance their professional skills.
Touring the NBC studios, watching a live taping of the Nightly News with Brian Williams, visiting the set of Saturday Night Live, Music Choice and Atlantic Records were just some of the places, bragging rights and a few perks that students had the benefit of gaining.
The Media Field Trip along with NSU's alumni provided the students with excellent advice. Jonathan Mason (77WABC Radio Broadcasting), Sharon Elcock (Parents Magazine) and Damon Williams (Music Choice) all shared a common message of "having passion." Each individual stressed the importance of having passion and drive for the specific area of concentration, that we as students will pursue; whether it be T.V. Production, Directing or Print Media.
But, it was alumni Damon Williams, a 1986 graduate, currently the Vice President of Programming and Production for Music Choice, who said it best. "When you demonstrate, you can contribute." He gave credit to NSU for "giving him the opportunity to be creative in really adverse and challenging situations." He went on to state that "Norfolk State University helps you to build a strong character and good communication and follow up skills." Williams illustrated his pride of being a great Spartan with every moment he was given.
Presentation and Representation of each company was the key component when visiting each studio. The performance level of Atlantic Records exhibited just that. Atlantic Records gave an outstanding Presentation and represented their company in great fashion, starting from the College Promotions Team straight down to the A&R Department. They gave concise, honest and valuable information and suggestions that each student took away with them upon leaving the Record Label.
The Annual Media Field Study Trip to New York City is indeed a great trip that I believe students within the Mass Communications and Journalism Department should partake in; if they are given the opportunity. Not only should students within the department take advantage of the opportunity, but as well as students who are outside the department. The experiences, in addition to possible internships and jobs that you may gain are infinite.
