NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State University men's basketball coach Anthony Evans announced his team's 2009-10 schedule on Wednesday. The non-conference slate includes games with opponents from the Big 12, Missouri Valley and Mid-American conferences, in-state foe James Madison, and two in-season holiday tournaments.

Six of the Spartans' potential non-conference opponents participated in postseason play last year, including Baylor, Illinois State and Niagara in the NIT, James Madison and UTEP in the CBI and Kent State in the CIT.

"We recognize that this season's schedule will be challenging," Evans said. "Moreover, it presents a great opportunity to further develop our team. We are excited to have the opportunity to compete against some outstanding non-conference opponents."

NSU tips the season off on Friday, Nov. 13 at Baylor University in the schools' first-ever meeting. Baylor won 24 games last season and advanced to the NIT finals before losing to Penn State.

NSU opens its home schedule on Monday, Nov. 16 when it hosts the University of Maine of the America East Conference. This will be the third time the schools have met after splitting a pair of games in 2000-01 and 2001-02.

Next is a trip to New Rochelle, N.Y, for a first-ever matchup against Iona College on Nov. 21. The game also gives seven New York natives on the Spartans' roster a chance to return to their home state.

After Thanksgiving, NSU will take part in the Basketball Travelers Classic hosted by Illinois State, Nov. 27-29. The round-robin tournament also included Missouri State and St. Bonaventure. Matchups have yet to be determined.

The Spartans' December slate begins with a Dec. 2 tilt at James Madison. The teams have played just once previously, a game won by JMU during NSU's transitional Division I season of 1997-98.

MEAC play begins on Dec. 5 as NSU hosts North Carolina A&T. The Spartans will then take to the road for their next six games, beginning Dec. 15 at Jacksonville State. This marks the third straight season the teams will face each other, with each winning once previously on the other's home floor.

The Spartans also play in the 2009 Sun Bowl Tournament in El Paso, Texas, Dec. 28 and 29. NSU will play host UTEP on Dec. 28, then either Air Force or Niagara on Dec. 29.

NSU wraps up its non-conference slate on Jan. 4 at Kent State. The schools have never faced each other.

The final 17 games of the year are against MEAC opponents. Like the last two seasons, only 16 games against MEAC teams count in the conference standings. The two games against Winston-Salem State do not count toward conference records because the Rams are not eligible for the MEAC Tournament.

In the league's unbalanced schedule, NSU will face Delaware State, Maryland Eastern, Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman once each. The Spartans will play every other MEAC school twice.

The MEAC Tournament returns to Winston-Salem, N.C. and the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum this season. The 2010 tourney runs from March 9-13.
